The 2021 tyranny index for oil and gas
When I first began publishing work on oil and gas nations and which ones were autocracies and dictatorships, few journalists or CEOs or politicians understood why it mattered if countries were overly dependent on energy supplies from such countries. After Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, most people now see the proplem more clearly. This 2021 study from Lennie Kaplan and I provides a useful glimpse of such risky dependency.
Internal Trade Provincial Leadership Index
This 2019 study from the Montreal Economic Institute examined free trade policy among the provinces. Co-author Peter St Onge and I found that Alberta had the fewest barriers to trade with Manitoba the next fewest.
There is plenty of debate about what constitutes “fair” tax policy and who should pay what proportion of the tax burden. This 2017 study for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation grounds the debate in hard data from filed tax returns, i.e., who pays what share of income tax in Canada. For example, in the tax year examined in this study, those with incomes over $100,000 accounted for 8.4% of all tax forms filed, accounted for 33.2% of all taxable income, and paid 51.8% of all federal income taxes and 54.5% of all provincial income taxes. Also, roughly one-third of tax filers paid no income tax, mostly due to low incomes.
