Dead men tell no tales but dead numbers do!

The thing about dead numbers

Unlike dead men—see Billy the Kid—who no longer tell tales, “dead numbers” tell us a lot about the economy. They can inform us where the economy was, is, and will be in the future.

With most of Canada booming and a sky-high American stock market, this keynote examines business investment trends in Canada, which are a leading indicator of where the economy is headed.

Drawn from over two decades of policy work, this keynote shows how and why smart policy choices by governments matter, and what can be done to attract investment dollars.

This keynote speech offers:

  • An introduction of the dynamic: Why investment—business investment in capital in particular—matters;

  • An explanation of what the numbers show now and what the says about your future;

  • How your audience benefits from optimal policy (or the reverse). For example, when billions of investment dollars flow into a small jurisdiction—be it a province or a First Nation—the result is a boom akin to spring rains and overflowing river banks. The result is a flourishing job market, rising incomes and choices for citizens.

“Mark’s keynote to a room of forestry industry professionals wove together key economic indicators as well as some of the underlying political imperatives “behind the numbers” to tell a story which had the attention of the room. A good measure of how successful a speaker is, is to gauge the number of conversations between participants after the presentation is over. Mark’s talk did exactly that with our group!” - Paul Whittaker, President and CEO, Alberta Forest Products Association

“Mark did an excellent job and was exactly what we hoped for. The Q&A portion went on for some time, which is always a good indication of how much our people are engaged!” - Tiffany Yaxley, CWLS

“You blew them away! Great job!” - Scott McFayden, Canadian Propane Association

“I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Mark Milke speak at our government liaison days where he explained the conversation around policies created by government and how much of a significant impact these decisions have for future generations. He was able to take the complexity of analyzing policy and explain it in an understandable and digestible way for anyone to comprehend. It was a real pleasure to hear him speak and I am very excited to delve into his books, especially Ralph vs. Rachel.” - Kristie Kruger, Realtor, Royal LePage South Country
